Limbs of Love are helping young and old people in need. Wednesday, July 30, 2008
They've been in business for about a year and a half-and have helped 11 people so far with a problem most of us don't think about.
"Artificial limbs can cost anywhere from 15-thousand to 50-thousand dollars," said Program Director Joe Sansone. He can remember each of the people the group has helped, each story touching and rewarding in its own way. Recently, the group helped a woman walk again for the first time in years. "When asked what she's going to do now that she can walk again, she said the first thing she's going to do is walk to the bus stop, and use the bus to go find a job," Sansone said. Limbs of Love helps the young and old, the active and less active, people from all walks of life. "We are going to be delivering limb next month to a patient who's competing in beauty pageants, and she's only got one arm. She didn't have the funds to pay for another arm, so here she is competing in beauty pageants, without a prosthetic device," Sansone said. Sansone said the need for the group points out a huge problem with the system-the fact that prosthetic limbs are generally not covered by health insurance policies. "There's an estimated five-thousand people in the city of Houston that have healthcare coverage-been paying for their premiums-but they do not have coverage for a prosthetic device," Sansone said.
